Last year's 2007 Amecon was a surprise when it was announced on their website at the end of 2006, this was mainly due to Ayacon often been run on the calendar with the odd numbered years. Unfortunately it was not scheduled to run in 2007 due to unforeseen circumstances non the less the reason behind this was forgiven when Amecon announced it would be filling in the gap left by Ayacon.
This year Amecon made another return at the same venue as last year The University of Leicester. This will mean the convention has ran every single year since 2006 making it the third in succession out of four conventions. The 2008 Amecon was announced on the final day of the last convention during the closing ceremony and the date of the event was confirmed on their website a few months later.
The date the convention took place was Friday 8th August - Sunday 10th August 2008.
Registration began in mid November 2007 and the Amecon committee also improved the registration process allowing you to pay your fee online via Google Checkout. This helped ease the problem of paying for members as instead of finding the dusty old cheque book.
This meant sending in the payment and waiting a long number of days before been confirmed as with paying online took most of the hassle our for both parties. The online payment option helped fill the convention and within the first few days almost half of the members had filled in the 1300 spots. This was much quicker than the previous year as by early December nearly all places were filled and by February most of the registered members had paid or were pending membership. The committee increased the expected capacity to 1500 from 1300 people.
The events that ran over the convention's weekend included the Cosplay Masquerade, the Cosplay Ball, Omake and many others to keep everyone occupied and entertained during the convention. Special guests that made their appearance at Amecon were Kari Walgren, Akemi Solloway and the band Gothika but unfortunately last year's special guest Monica Rial was not able to attend due to her work schedule.
As per usual we were there for our third Amecon convention and made the effort of going in cosplay for the first time. All the images of the event have been included here Amecon 2008 Pictures and Images.
At the end of Amecon 2008 a brilliant announcement was made by the committee during the closing ceremony. Amecon committee explained they will return with another Amecon in 2010 but 2009 will see the return of Ayacon. At this moment details on Ayacon including the convention dates have not been confirmed.
